Green Energy Roofs project

:::

As part of Taiwan's goal to increase renewable resources to 20 percent of total energy supply by 2025, the government has set out to install 3 gigawatts of rooftop solar power generating capacity across the nation. Toward that end, the Green Energy Roofs project was launched under the principle of "zero funding from the public and zero subsidies from the government," whereby local authorities select appropriate service providers to help building owners install and manage the power generating systems, and any excess power not used by building occupants is sold to the grid at a feed-in tariff rate that is fixed for 20 years from the installation date. All of these measures will encourage building owners to install rooftop units as early as possible.

Expected benefits

Nuclear-free homeland: A decentralized system for self-generation and self-consumption of clean energy will move Taiwan steadily toward its objective of becoming nuclear-free..

Stable electricity supply: Most solar-powered energy is produced during noontime hours, which helps meet peak power demand.

Improved air quality: Green energy production can reduce the usage of fossil-fuel burning generators, curb air pollution, and lower levels of fine particulate matter.

Aesthetic city landscape: Professional service providers install the rooftop units as part of an overall design for a more aesthetic city landscape.

More investments and jobs: Over three years the plan is expected to generate NT$120 billion (US$3.9 billion) in investments and create 12,000 job opportunities.
