During a visit to the 2018 Kaohsiung International Travel Fair, Vice Premier Shih Jun-ji said on Friday that in the face of stiff global competition, the government will carry on with efforts to expand main markets and encourage repeat visitors using effective communications strategies that will boost Taiwan's visibility on the international stage.
To draw visitors from new markets in countries covered by the New Southbound Policy, the government has already established targeted strategies, and continues efforts to simplify the visa process while also rolling out incentive measures and special offers.
In January of this year the Executive Yuan approved Tourism 2020–A Sustainable Tourism Development Strategy for Taiwan in order to encourage the positive development of the nation's tourism industry and drive the transformation and upgrade of related businesses. The new strategy aims to improve the quality of domestic tourism and widen international marketing efforts, raising Taiwan's profile as a friendly, smart and immersive destination.
Tourism in Taiwan must create value, Vice Premier Shih emphasized, in addition to increasing investment and improving quality. Taiwan has seen tourism visits top 10 million in each of the previous three years, and with this rise in tourist volume, regard for the rights and interests of visitors, as well as attention to quality, will grow ever more important.
