Smart and low-carbon technologies, health and sustainability keys to future

:::

At today's Cabinet meeting Premier Lin Chuan was briefed on the 10th National Science and Technology Conference held last week, and noted that the conference themes—smart technologies, low-carbon solutions, health and sustainability—are all important for Taiwan's scientific and technological future.

The premier instructed the Ministry of Science and Technology (MOST) to plan and implement development projects based on the conference resolutions, emphasizing that scientific and technological development must be tied into the nation's industrial growth. He also expressed hope that the science and technology conference will thus be integrated with next year's National Industrial Development Conference so the government can formulate clear plans and directions for Taiwan's technological and industrial development, and reminded the organizers to keep that in mind in planning the conference.

According to MOST, scientific and technological innovation is critical for economic growth, so countries around the world are investing heavily in innovative research and development to identify future technologies that will transform and upgrade their industries.

This year's science and technology conference focused on three topics:

  • Basic environment: Construct a talent development and regulatory environment that encourages the diversification of scientific research activities.
  • Smart living: Build a smart and sustainable living environment by applying new technologies to agriculture, medical care, disaster prevention, green energy, environmental quality and information security.
  • Economic development: Use digital business models to promote innovative entrepreneurship and inject new energy into the economy.
