Strengthen children's rights protection: premier

:::

In observance of Universal Children's Day yesterday, Premier Jiang Yi-huah asked Cabinet members today to step up measures protecting children's rights and interests. Children's welfare has for years been a focus of development in Taiwan, he said. With joint efforts between public and private sectors, Taiwan in 2011 passed the Protection of Children and Youths Welfare and Rights Act in line with the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child. This act provides the legal base for government agencies to implement stronger policies in the future.

Rapid changes in Taiwan's society in recent years have led to worrisome increases in psychological and behavioral problems among juveniles. The Ministry of Health and Welfare (MOHW) therefore established the Social and Family Affairs Administration, offering comprehensive support for families to provide a healthy familial environment for the young. As the work of protecting children and youth covers many aspects, the premier has also asked Minister without Portfolio Joyce Feng to lead an Executive Yuan-level task force that will work with civic organizations and experts in the field while coordinating efforts across government agencies. The premier asked the MOHW to complete preparations quickly and enable the task force to begin operations at an early date.
