ROC (Taiwan) female athlete Lin Tzu-chi won the 2014 Asian Games women's 63-kilogram (kg) weightlifting competition today with a world-record combined score of 261 kg.
Upon hearing the news, Premier Jiang Yi-huah immediately sent a congratulatory message to Lin for her excellent performance and for bringing pride to the nation.
Jiang's message was delivered to Lin by Ting Joseph Shih, ROC representative to South Korea, who attended the event and presented her with a cash reward of US$1,000. Joining Shih was Director-General Ho Jow-fei of the Ministry of Education's Sports Administration (SA), who is in Korea to oversee the national team's competitions, the Executive Yuan stated. The SA will award Lin NT$3 million (US$100,000) for winning the gold in accordance with the Regulations for Issuance of Guo Guang Medals and Scholarships for outstanding athletes.
Undaunted by intense pressure from archrival Deng Wei of mainland China, Lin lifted 116 kg in the snatch and 145 kg in the clean and jerk, breaking the event and world records for her weight class, respectively.
Lin's gold medal is the second the national team has won at the Asian Games, which are being held in Incheon, South Korea from September 19 through October 4. The team also has earned one silver and five bronze medals.
