Tropic of Cancer, summer solstice inspire new tourism campaign

:::
At the Cabinet's weekly meeting today, the Ministry of Transportation and Communications (MOTC) said a new campaign to promote Taiwan as a fun summer travel destination is expected to bring in NT$10 billion (US$333 million) for the local tourism industry this year.

The "Taiwan Fun on the Tropic of Cancer" campaign, which will run from late June to the end of September, highlights Taiwan's position on the Tropic of Cancer, an imaginary line where the sun appears directly overhead during the summer solstice. The MOTC has created eight main travel themes based on a host of summer activities to be held at national scenic areas and tourist towns along the Tropic of Cancer. This marks the first time these destinations are being marketed collectively under a unifying theme.

Premier Jiang Yi-huah commended those who worked diligently and devoted the resources to make the events a reality. He asked other ministries and local governments to help the Tourism Bureau get the word out so that the festivities will be able to draw the largest possible numbers of people.

The tours will feature themes from nature, history and the humanities, among others. The MOTC has designed 24 travel routes and 30 serial activities and estimates that 3.5 million people will participate.
