Draft amendments to legislation approved to curb drunk driving

:::

The Executive Yuan Thursday approved draft amendments to the ROC Criminal Code and the Criminal Code of the Armed Forces to increase penalties for drunk driving. The proposed revisions will be forwarded to the Legislature for review.

At the Cabinet's weekly meeting, Premier Su Tseng-chang said that drunk driving and other unsafe driving behaviors are serious threats to traffic safety, robbing innocent lives and destroying many families. On March 26, the Legislature passed amendments to the Road Traffic Management and Penalty Act to increase administrative fines for drunk drivers. To effectively deter drunk driving and ensure the safety of citizens, the amendments to Article 185-3 of the ROC Criminal Code and Article 54 of the Criminal Code of the Armed Forces, proposed respectively by the Ministry of Justice and the Ministry of National Defense, will impose heavier punishments on repeat offenders who cause death and severe injuries.
