Premier Lin Chuan said today that developing the information security industry starts with legal and administrative issues. On the legal front, the government's proposed cybersecurity bill can provide guidelines for effective security management. In the administrative area, the Executive Yuan's Department of Cyber Security will link government agencies including the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Ministry of Science and Technology with National Security Council expertise to develop a national cybersecurity industry, and ensure the effectiveness of Taiwan's cybersecurity mechanisms.
The premier, speaking after a high-level cybersafety forum, also said that in addition to legal and administrative efforts, advanced research and development capabilities are essential for developing a thriving domestic cybersecurity industry. The government is therefore devoting extensive effort to setting up core research and development infrastructure and assembling the requisite talent.
Those efforts also include integrating existing resources from the Industrial Technology Research Institute, Institute for Information Industry, Academia Sinica and Chunghwa Telecom Laboratories to set up a core research and development unit to help create a competitive cybersecurity industry.
A powerful information industry is a prerequisite for developing a thriving cybersecurity industry. So given that Taiwan has a good electronic information hardware industry and is developing its software industry, there is potential for a more internationalized information industry development, the foundation of the nation's information security industry, Lin said.
The government is currently promoting smart transportation, artificial intelligence and the internet of things, all of which will facilitate the future development of the information industry, which promises to complement the information security industry, and help it continue to advance and become an international standard bearer.
