The Cabinet on Thursday approved draft amendments to the Personal Data Protection Act, proposed by the National Development Council. The draft amendments are designed to address recent instances of personal data leaks which have garnered significant public attention and triggered widespread calls for increased financial penalties. The proposed changes, which stiffen fines relating to personal data breaches, will now be submitted to the Legislative Yuan for deliberation.
Premier Chen Chien-jen said that the proposed amendments are an important step in the Executive Yuan's fight against fraud, and that reducing leaks of personal data will also help to prevent scams. He directed relevant central government ministries and agencies to strengthen enforcement ahead of the anticipated establishment of an independent supervisory body for personal data protection. He also called on companies and individuals to enhance their information security and personal data protection practices, and make a collective effort to protect the public's personal data.
