The Executive Yuan will utilize its second reserve fund so that children age six months to six years old may receive influenza vaccinations free of charge, Premier Sean Chen announced in an Executive Yuan Council meeting November 8 and reiterated while receiving interpellation in the Legislature today.
Previously, only seniors age 65 and up were eligible for free flu shots.
Chen expressed concern about flu season, which is reaching its peak period, and said the Department of Health (DOH) will coordinate with hospitals and clinics to implement the government subsidy.
Influenza activity begins peaking in December, and vaccination is the best way to help people build resistance to the disease, Chen said. He has instructed the DOH to cooperate with local governments to encourage vaccinations, especially for those with higher risk of infection such as infants and toddlers, seniors, and poultry and livestock industry staff. "The government is duty-bound to offer ever more comprehensive medical care to ensure people's health and safety," the premier said.
