Construction of Taichung international airport at full speed

:::

A new international terminal at the Taichung Ching Chuan Kang Airport was opened April 11 as scheduled, completing first stage of a project to build an international airport in central Taiwan, the Ministry of Transportation and Communications (MOTC) reported to the Executive Yuan today.

Premier Jiang Yi-huah said the airport will serve as an important gateway in central Taiwan for international and cross-strait flights. He thanked the crew at the MOTC for their efforts and expressed gratitude for active cooperation by the Taichung City Government and other government agencies.

Jiang asked the Civil Aeronautics Administration (CAA) to better learn the needs of passengers and upgrade airport facilities and services to international standards. The premier also requested the CAA to speed up plans for the construction of a by-pass taxiway on the airport's north side and for renovations of the existing terminal building.

The premier directed the CAA to work with the Taichung City Government and other agencies to improve the airport's overall landscape as well as its surrounding traffic network. When completed, the new airport is expected to bring growth and prosperity to the entire central Taiwan region, he said.

The CAA said that the new airport will continue to service domestic and international routes. The number of flights to the offshore islands and eastern Taiwan will largely remain at current levels while international and cross-strait flights will see significant expansion. The CAA will continue to improve the airport's operating efficiency, raise the terminals' overall service volume and facility standards, develop new flight routes, monitor capacity growth and build new facilities as appropriate.
