Regarding the possible reactivation of the No. 1 reactor at Taiwan's First Nuclear Power Plant, Premier Lin Chuan has reiterated that the government remains committed to phasing out nuclear power in Taiwan by 2025 and does not intend to extend the service lives of Taiwan's three active nuclear plants, Executive Yuan Spokesperson Tung Chen-yuan said today.
The premier also emphasized that the government will exhaust all other means of saving energy before turning to nuclear energy, Tung added. The top priorities now are to carry out existing energy projects as scheduled, better manage power supply and demand, and develop new energy resources. The reactivation of the No. 1 reactor would only be considered if three conditions are met—that all other means have been exhausted, safety is guaranteed, and a public consensus has been reached.
