Premier Chang San-cheng today inspected households without water supply since the Feb. 6 earthquake in Tainan City's Yuguang Village of Anping District and Huweiliao of East District. He directed the water-supply company to work all-out to restore running water to all households before Feb. 24.
The premier instructed the company to examine its contingency measures for post-earthquake periods when regular water supply has yet to be restored, and pledged that the government will also examine such measures.
The government will do its best to restore normal water supply, Chang reiterated during the inspection at Yuguang Village. He instructed the water company to look into the situations of households with disadvantaged or disabled members and assist them on a case-by-case basis.
The Feb. 6 earthquake demonstrated that relevant agencies must replace single large pipelines with numerous smaller pipelines in order to prevent damage to a single large pipeline from affecting regular water supply, Chang added while inspecting households without water at Huweiliao.
He promised to continue to monitor the progress made in restoring the water supply. The premier asked the water company engineers to continue their efforts in full throttle, do their utmost to control risk, and restore water supply no later than Feb. 24. If any variables arise, the company must update the public with the latest information.
In addition Chang will ask the Ministry of Economic Affairs and water-supply companies to coordinate experienced personnel and engineers for cross-regional support and incorporate such assistance into their natural-disaster standard operating procedure.
