Premier supports HK universal suffrage, urges peaceful end to protests

:::
As the Occupy Central protest movement continues to engulf Hong Kong, the people and government of the Republic of China fully support the demands of Hong Kong residents for democracy and universal suffrage, Premier Jiang Yi-huah said during an interview today.

But with a number of clashes breaking out, Premier Jiang hopes demonstrators and authorities in Hong Kong can engage in a rational and peaceful dialogue. He believes Hong Kong's long history of freedom and rule of law will guide this episode to a peaceful conclusion.

Affirming freedom and democracy as universal values, the premier said that Taiwan's government will be watching these developments very closely. He called on people around the world to stand with the residents of Hong Kong in their struggle and quest for democracy.
