Government to aid farmers with agricultural losses

:::
Premier Mao Chi-kuo today enjoined the Council of Agriculture (COA) to speedily disburse relief funds in accordance with related regulations to farmers who suffered agricultural losses from Typhoon Soudelor, and to set up relevant standards for low-interest loans and process the applications of these farmers as soon as possible.

The premier gave these instructions after being briefed at the COA on typhoon agricultural losses and COA response measures.

Tasks related to agricultural facility insurance must also be carried out as quickly as possible, the premier said. COA Minister Chen Bao-ji mentioned that the council can refer to the regulations for insuring fishing boats and ships, and deliberate with insurers on the facilities that can be insured.

In response to demand for the establishment of low-temperature grain storage silos, a task under the jurisdiction of the Agricultural Development Fund, the premier enjoined the COA to speedily carry out the construction in stages as funding allows.

With regard to the prices of vegetables, fruits, fish and meat, the COA must quickly restore the market to order via ample supplies, Mao instructed. For example, the COA report mentioned that there is much room for improvement in spring onions, bananas and oysters.

The premier also reminded the COA to be particularly vigilant against animal and plant epidemics that are likely to occur after typhoons. The agency must take up preparations and precautions to prevent any such epidemic outbreaks.

The premier expressed satisfaction about the speed of post-typhoon inspections and appraisals. Minister Chen grasped hold of the latest developments, deliberated with local governments on the handling principles and methods in a timely manner, and gave directions early on to prevent mishaps from occurring, Mao said. The premier especially expressed gratitude to all those who stood firm in their posts to accomplish their duties during the typhoon period.
