During his visit to Largan Precision Co. in Taichung today, Premier Jiang said that the government strongly encourages enterprises to share their earnings with employees and pointed to the mobile phone lens maker's generous salary increase plan as an excellent example for other businesses.
The premier also pledged to remove business barriers to facilitate the inflow of investments from overseas Taiwanese enterprises, which will ultimately benefit all of the people of Taiwan.
Taiwan's industries must transform themselves to create more added value for their products, Premier Jiang remarked. Largan Precision, for one, has persisted in research and development efforts to evolve from a traditional camera lens maker into a globally leading supplier of premium optical lenses to international first-tier smartphone brands.
Through constant innovation, Largan Precision has also been able to customize its services and products to clients' needs, manufacturing sophisticated lenses no larger than a grain of rice in some instances. This makes the company an exemplar of "service-oriented manufacturing"—one of the focal areas outlined in the government's Three Industries, Four Reforms program, Premier Jiang said.
Additionally, the government has rolled out many initiatives to woo back Taiwanese firms that have shifted operations abroad. At present, more than two-thirds of Largan's 6,000 personnel are working in Taiwan, and this proportion has risen quickly over the past two years. The premier thanked the firm for supporting the government's policies and for being among the first companies that have come home and created jobs for Taiwanese citizens. This philosophy of caring for one's employees and working together through good times and bad brings greater hope for Taiwan's future, Jiang said.
After hearing about the company's history from Largan chief executive Lin En-ping, Jiang expressed high admiration for the firm's advanced technology and production capabilities. As a major player in Taiwan's information and communications technology and consumer electronics industries, Largan has huge potential in technological and manufacturing growth, Jiang believes. With zero debt, the company is also a rarity in the business world.
Finally, the premier thanked Largan for working to lower its energy and water consumption. Such an effort to minimize impact on Taiwan's ecological environment is a model of corporate social responsibility, he lauded.
