Premier Mao Chi-kuo today underscored the importance of developing assistive technology and services, saying it will better meet the needs of elderly and disabled individuals as well as the family members, institutions and professionals who care for them. The premier made the remarks after hearing a report from the Executive Yuan's Office of Science and Technology (OST).
Regarding assistive services, Premier Mao directed the Ministry of Health and Welfare (MOHW) to integrate resources across the health, welfare, labor and education departments so as to create an assistive device information platform that will improve services at local assistive centers. This platform should be built around users' needs and offer integrative services. The MOHW was also instructed to review existing regulations and design a suitable service model in line with policies on long-term care services and insurance.
As for the assistive technology industry, Premier Mao asked the OST to incorporate assistive technology initiatives from relevant agencies into the nation's bioeconomy development plan. The OST will also work with the Innovation and Startups Taskforce and the Cabinet's Productivity 4.0 plan to shift Taiwan's focus from components to total systems. Using the process of innovation, trials and commercialization, the government can develop assistive technology into a booming health industry for Taiwan.
The OST said plans are also afoot to promote assistive device rentals and create new technologies for care services. These efforts will boost Taiwan's wellness and care industry by helping medical equipment suppliers cultivate their own product and service brands. The emphasis will be on replicable, exportable products services, including assistive devices that are smart, home-based, and give users greater mobility.
