The Executive Yuan welcomed the end of former Democratic Progressive Party Chairman Lin Yi-hsiung's hunger strike in protest of the construction of the Longmen Nuclear Power Plant (LNPP), which would be the nation's fourth, and wishes him a speedy recovery to full health, Spokesperson Sun Lih-chyun stated today.
Lin is also welcome to attend the national energy conference to be held this August and September, where participants will aim to ensure the nation will not face energy shortages as a result of the suspension of the LNPP, stated the spokesperson.
"Mr. Lin is invited to join in this great undertaking and work together with us to determine Taiwan's future energy policy," Sun said.
The government plans to put the first reactor of the LNPP into protective storage once safety checks have been completed and not activate it, and construction of the second reactor will cease.
The guiding principles of the administration's nuclear policy are to ensure nuclear safety, create a green and low-carbon environment, and gradually reduce the use of nuclear power until Taiwan is a nuclear-free homeland, Sun remarked.
He also called the end of Lin's hunger strike the beginning of a mutual, peaceful and rational resolution to the disputes between the ruling and opposition parties and requested that the opposition peacefully and rationally works together with the government for the sake of Taiwan's future.
