Education drives national progress in transitional justice

:::

At Thursday's weekly Cabinet meeting, Premier Cho Jung-tai received a report from the Executive Yuan's Department of Human Rights and Transitional Justice on the results of the government's national transitional justice education initiative. The premier said that education is a vital pillar within the broader transitional justice process. Only by teaching local history, remembering the suffering of those who came before, and reflecting upon the injustices of state violence during the authoritarian era, can the recurrence of such wrongs be prevented.

The premier stated that many former victims of political persecution and their families have stepped forward to dedicate themselves to transitional justice education. He expressed his heartfelt gratitude and respect for their contributions, and voiced hope that society will draw upon these memories and this history to honor the legacy of past generations who endured persecution.

Premier Cho noted that transitional justice education is a statutory responsibility of the nation, one the government cannot abdicate. In 2026, the Executive Yuan will continue advancing transitional justice education in five major areas: mobilizing universities to lead nearby schools in developing teaching materials, assisting key government agencies in reviewing their education efforts, ensuring stable resource allocation to help organizations and schools advance education initiatives, supporting civil society's use of the Promoting Transitional Justice Fund to expand education outreach, and improving the legal framework for transitional justice education.
