Executive Yuan affirms marriage equality ruling, moves to make necessary legal changes

:::

Spokesperson Hsu Kuo-yung said that the Executive Yuan supports the ruling in Constitutional Interpretation No. 748 regarding same-sex marriage, announced today by the Judicial Yuan's Constitutional Court, and will move forward with the requisite legal changes.

Interpretation No. 748 directs the authorities to amend the relevant laws or enact new laws within two years of today's announcement, and Premier Lin Chuan has already directed Executive Yuan Secretary-General Chen Mei-ling to coordinate follow-up efforts by the Ministry of Justice and Ministry of the Interior. The required legislation will thus be drafted within the prescribed time period and sent to the Legislature for deliberation.

Spokesperson Hsu went on to say that the Executive Yuan's draft legislation will be both reasonable and viable, based on the interpretation announced today, and designed to minimize social repercussions while maximizing social consensus.
