Premier Lai Ching-te traveled to Keelung today to observe progress on the Dawulun River remediation project. In addition to the importance of funding, the premier noted that Keelung Mayor Lin Yu-chang's determination, the expertise of the Water Resources Agency (WRA) and the collective efforts of local authorities are also critical for such expansive construction.
The premier thanked the mayor for his diligence and hard work, as well as local council members and borough wardens for their interest and attention. The premier expressed his hope that the local and central governments will cooperate closely to ensure the full success of future water management work.
Based on his experience with flood control during nearly seven years as mayor of Tainan, once known as the most flood-prone city in Taiwan, Premier Lai believes the WRA's integrated water management plan for the Dawulun River will be effective. The work being undertaken, whether raising levees, dredging the river, or constructing flood pools or interception stations, has been specifically designed with Keelung's environment in mind. About NT$1.5 billion (US$49.9 million) in medium to long-term funding for this remediation project was approved by the Legislative Yuan with multipartisan support.
