Premier Jiang visits machine tool manufacturers

:::
Premier Jiang Yi-huah and a delegation of top-ranking government officials today kicked off a two-day visit to central Taiwan for a close-up look at developments in the machine tool industry. Machine tools are a focal industry under the Executive Yuan's Economic Power-Up Plan that uses smart design and service-oriented manufacturing to create innovative business models and boost added-value production.

At a symposium held at Hiwin Technologies Corp. located in the Taichung City Precision Machinery Innovation Technology Park, Premier Jiang met with representatives from 23 machine tool manufacturers and exchanged opinions on economic and industrial development, talent cultivation, foreign currency exchange, taxation and cross-strait trade.

In terms of talent retention, Premier Jiang said many skilled professionals are being lured away to mainland China by offers of higher wages and material benefits. Hence the government will work with the private sector to create more attractive conditions based on Taiwan's innovative environment, democratic freedom and other advantages.

Among the issues broached by the representatives, more than half can be readily resolved, the premier said. Another one-third, more complicated in nature, will be referred to a minister without portfolio for further review. Meanwhile, the premier will ask Deputy Secretary-General Chien Tai-lang to coordinate communication across agencies and assist the minister without portfolio in crafting solutions and responses within three months.

After the symposium, Premier Jiang dined with the representatives and journalists at Hiwin's cafeteria, followed by evening tea with the representatives and Hiwin managers. He stayed overnight at the factory's staff dormitory.

Founded in 1989, Hiwin Technologies Corp. is a leading manufacturer of Taiwan machinery and the world's second-largest manufacturer of motion control systems. It has also been named by the government as a "hidden champion" of Taiwan's economy.
