At today's Cabinet meeting, Premier Jiang Yi-huah expressed gratitude to police and investigation units for quickly identifying two suspects in last Friday's bomb scare in which explosive devices were found on a northbound high-speed train and near a lawmaker's office.
Working with evidence from the case, the police tracked down the suspects, who allegedly planted the gasoline-filled suitcases and fled to mainland China. Under the Cross-Strait Agreement on Joint Crime-Fighting and Judicial Mutual Assistance, mainland authorities quickly arrested the pair and repatriated them to Taiwan on Tuesday.
Commending investigation and police units for the all-out effort, Premier Jiang said he hoped the officers would remain alert to similar cases and continue applying scientific methods in their investigations, cracking cases swiftly to help the public feel safe again.
Those who planned this attack targeted the high speed rail and endangered the many people who depend on it for travel, said the premier. He gave instructions for the Ministry of the Interior's (MOI) National Police Agency to reinforce patrol and preventive efforts, and asked the Ministry of Transportation and Communications (MOTC) to work with the High Speed Rail Corp. to increase security measures without unduly inconveniencing passengers. As new safety measures are created, the MOI and the MOTC should quickly announce that information so as to ensure the safety of passengers, Jiang said.
