At the Cabinet's weekly meeting Thursday, Premier Cho Jung-tai received a Ministry of Agriculture (MOA) briefing on two programs for 2027-2030, one focused on developing smart, resilient agricultural infrastructure and the other on establishing a support system for agricultural mechanization. The premier said that, in the face of challenges such as intensifying extreme weather, agricultural labor shortages and an aging population, it is urgent that Taiwan stabilize farm production and expedite the sector's transformation and upgrading.
To heighten agricultural resilience, climate adaptability and the level of agricultural mechanization, the MOA has proposed two programs. The first program aims to develop smart, resilient agricultural infrastructure and will promote disaster-resilient structures, precision management of hydroponic nutrient solutions, modular vertical farming, and smart neural networks utilizing the artificial intelligence of things (AIoT) to monitor microclimates. The second program will establish a demonstration model for agricultural mechanization, focusing on the four objectives of facilitating purchases of small-scale farming machinery, creating shared-use services for large-scale machinery, ensuring the safe operation of agricultural machines and enhancing food security resilience.
The premier noted that the two programs will receive a combined NT$15.2 billion (approximately US$467.6 million) in funding to support the upgrading of agricultural facilities, optimize subsidy strategies for agricultural machinery, and accelerate the transition of Taiwan's agriculture to a more resilient, efficient, labor-saving and data-driven smart production model.
