Taiwan mulls a national radioactive waste management center

:::
The Cabinet today green-lighted a bill by the Ministry of Economic Affairs (MOEA) for establishing a national radioactive waste management center.

It is essential to create an agency for managing radioactive waste, given the issue's great complexity. The bill would facilitate an institutionalized system and the establishment of a specialized unit to take over nuclear waste management responsibilities from Taiwan Power Co., Premier Mao Chi-kuo said.

The MOEA said it will design the center as a non-departmental public body, having consulted measures in major developed countries operating nuclear power and taken domestic practice into account. The center would help establish optimal facilities and management systems for radioactive waste disposal.

The bill will be submitted to the Legislative Yuan for deliberation. Premier Mao instructed the MOEA and the Atomic Energy Council to work closely with legislators to fast-track its enactment.
