The 2012 International Conference on Homeland Security was held today by the Executive Yuan's Office of Homeland Security, with Vice Premier Jiang Yi-huah presiding over the opening ceremony.
The agenda included homeland security policy, travel security, supply chain security and critical infrastructure protection. Senior professionals, experienced officials and academic experts from home and abroad were invited to discuss these issues.
More than 400 representatives of foreign institutes based in Taiwan, government agencies, industry and academia attended the event, and the exchanges that took place are expected to contribute to improving Taiwan's security policies.
Attendees included Mark Koumans, deputy assistant secretary for international affairs of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security; Olivier Russ, adviser to the EU Counter-terrorism Coordinator; Monika Mosshammer from the European Commission's Directorate General for Home Affairs; and Md Salleh Said, director of customs at the Royal Malaysian Customs Department.
Domestic agencies participating in the discussion included the Ministry of Foreign Affairs' Bureau of Consular Affairs; the Ministry of Economic Affairs' Bureau of Standards, Metrology and Inspection; the Ministry of the Interior's National Immigration Agency; the Ministry of Finance's Directorate General of Customs; the Executive Yuan's Office of Information and Communication Security; and the Ministry of Transportation and Communications' Transportation Mobilization Committee.
This was the seventh such conference the Executive Yuan has held. The first was in 2005.
