Premier Su Tseng-chang on Tuesday said that the Executive Yuan has approved NT$1.14 billion (US$36.9 million) for the procurement and construction of a new ferry to provide greater convenience in maritime transport between Taiwan and the outlying Matsu archipelago.
The premier made the announcement in Matsu while inspecting and reviewing plans for the vessel, which will replace the aging Taima Ferry currently in service.
As for Matsu's air transport services, comprehensive planning for runway improvement at Beigan Airport are expected to be completed by year's end, Premier Su said. And in land transportation, the Executive Yuan has approved funding for the construction of a bridge connecting Beigan and Nangan, two of Matsu's largest islands.
Central and local authorities should unite and work with one purpose, to build up Matsu and accelerate local development, the premier added.
