Taiwan to advance toward intelligent cities and townships

:::

Developing intelligent cities, townships and villages is a national vision, Premier Mao Chi-kuo stated at the Cabinet meeting today after a briefing by the Ministry of the Interior (MOI) on its accomplishments in promoting smart green buildings and the prospects of intelligent cities.

All the structural elements of intelligent buildings, communities and cities—including smart government, services, transportation, elderly care systems, school campuses, and energy, waste and water resources management—have in general been completed, Mao noted. He enjoined various ministries to compile and integrate all issues related to city development and promote them under the existent framework.

The premier pointed out that the smart green architecture project was enforced by the Executive Yuan beginning in 2010. With MOI promotion and execution over the years, the project has garnered results. Expanding from smart green architecture toward smart community and then to smart city development is the right direction, and the MOI should continue its efforts, the premier commended.

Thanks to the joint efforts of relevant agencies and the private sector, each of the original targets of the intelligent green buildings promotion plan has already been surpassed, the MOI pointed out. As of June this year:
● Investments had reached NT$67.6 billion (US$2.06 billion), surpassing the original target
of NT$26 billion (US$790.51 million) by 259 percent.
● Production value totaled NT$937.6 billion (US$28.51 billion), exceeding the targeted
NT$749.3 billion (US$22.78 billion) by 125 percent.
● Energy conservation and carbon reduction amounted to 4.61 million metric tons,
outperforming the planned 3.82 million metric tons by 120 percent.
● The number of jobs generated totaled 297,000, outnumbering the expected 241,000
jobs by 123 percent.

Based on national policy and taking into reference other countries' development, the MOI has formulated a plan to promote intelligent green buildings and communities, the MOI stated. The measures include popularizing such buildings and upgrading their standards as well as experimenting with innovative smart communities. The plan envisions expanding from individual points to the whole of Taiwan, transforming it into a high-quality intelligent island. This plan is expected to attract investment of NT$1 billion (US$30.40 million), induce production of NT$713.9 billion (US$21.71 billion), conserve energy and reduce carbon by 8.8 million metric tons, and generate 178,000 jobs.
