Premier Jiang Yi-huah today stressed that Taiwan must make the shift from efficiency-driven to innovation-driven industrial growth if it is to stay ahead of its competitors. Taiwan must also accelerate its industrial transformation and generate new added value.
The premier's remark came after a report by the Ministry of Economic Affairs (MOEA) on promoting "industrial innovation corridors" in Taiwan. Jiang said the corridors will spur regional innovation by bringing together the creative strengths of local industries, universities and core research institutes.
"This initiative is also in line with President Ma Ying-jeou's visions for fostering regional development and building an innovation-friendly environment," Jiang noted. By matching local demand with local resources, the corridors will enhance the competitive advantages of Taiwan's industries.
"Industrial parks and centers are the main engines behind R&D innovation in their respective regions," Jiang said. He directed the MOEA, the Ministry of Education and the National Science Council to utilize these centers to aid technology transfer and business development. The MOEA should also provide special attention to the micro-businesses and weaker industries in each region.
When planning the corridors, the premier continued, the MOEA should factor in the unique features of each region and help incubation centers overcome the obstacles they face.
