Premier applauds Taiwan's 2017 Summer Universiade athletes for stacking up wins

:::

At today's Cabinet meeting, Premier Lin Chuan applauded the excellent performance of Taiwan's athletes at the 29th Summer Universiade, and said that he looks forward to their continued efforts to win even more medals. The national team has not only exceeded the originally established benchmark and taken more medals than at last year's games, weightlifter Kuo Hsing-chun set a new world record in her event.

The 2017 Summer Universiade is the highest-level international sporting competition in Taiwan's history and has brought the nation into the global spotlight, said Premier Lin. The premier indicated that hosting a successful event is the shared responsibility of the government and people of Taiwan. He added that the matchless presentation of the Universiade will demonstrate to visiting athletes, tourists and spectators the friendliness and hospitality of the Taiwanese public.

The actions of certain protesters—which interfered with some athletes' participation in the opening ceremony—damaged Taiwan's national image abroad and mooted the arduous endeavors undertaken by the event's organizers, said Premier Lin. With respect to security efforts at the upcoming closing ceremony to be held on August 30, the premier instructed the interior ministry to enhance preparations in all areas to ensure the successful conclusion of the games.
