Two outstanding Taiwanese weightlifters, Hsu Shu-ching and Lin Tzu-chi, have netted gold medals and set a total of four new world records at the 2014 Asian Games in Incheon, South Korea. Premier Jiang Yi-huah is pleased about the victories and shares the joy of the people of Taiwan, Executive Yuan Spokesperson Sun Lih-chyun said today.
Yesterday, Lin garnered a gold in the women's 63 kilogram (kg) weight class, breaking world records with a clean and jerk of 145 kg and a combined score of 261 kg as well as the event record with a 116 kg snatch. On Sunday, Hsu seized the gold in the women's 53 kg weight class, smashing world records with a clean and jerk of 132 kg and a combined score of 233 kg.
To reward these two exceptional athletes and encourage domestic sports culture, the Ministry of Education will award them each NT$3 million (US$100,000) according to the Regulations for Issuance of Guo Guang Medals and Scholarships. In addition, the Executive Yuan will give an additional reward of NT$1 million (US$33,333) to each of these two athletes and another NT$1 million to each of their coaching staffs.
