Matsu is a premier religious tourism destination, vice premier says

:::
Matsu is a prime faith tourism destination, Vice Premier Mao Chi-kuo said today when he visited the islands to celebrate the completion of the Matsu Religious Park.

"Legend has it that the Double Ninth Festival (the ninth day of the ninth month of the lunar calendar, which is October 13 this year) is the day the goddess Mazu ascended to heaven. She is the namesake of these islands, which will seize an unshakeable new place in Chinese Mazu culture with the creation of this park. This is a new beginning," Mao remarked after hosting the opening ceremony for the park's new gazebo on behalf of Premier Jiang Yi-huah.

The vice premier pointed out that hot spots are necessary for tourism development, and with the park finished, "Mazu is in Matsu" can be the advertising slogan for the islands. "This is a patent that no other Mazu-worshipping area can claim," he emphasized.

According to the Ministry of Transportation and Communications (MOTC), at the Matsu Religious Park one can enjoy a panoramic view of a beautiful seascape while walking along the marina trail which begins at the Mazu temple, visit the spectacular boat-shaped gazebo, and see a giant 28.8-meter Mazu statue from up close as well as fishing boats on the water from a distance.

"I have witnessed this park's entire construction process, and I would like to express my gratitude to the design and construction teams which overcame many difficulties to complete this project," said Mao, who was previously MOTC Minister. He also commended the Lienchiang County Government and the MOTC's Tourism Bureau for their management of the site, which is a National Scenic Area.

"My wish is that, like the boat after which this gazebo is modeled, Matsu's tourism development will embark on a new journey and cleave through the waves," he stated.

After this event, the vice premier served as an officiant in a ritual commemorating Mazu's ascension and paid homage to the goddess. He then inspected the holy tunnel said to bless all who pass through it.

Mao next attended a party at the port and enjoyed local snacks, all the while sharing warm interactions with citizens. Following that was a presentation of healthy Matsu cuisine. The vice premier praised the chefs' use of local ingredients and expressed hope that other national scenic areas follow suit by promoting their own unique dishes.
