The Executive Yuan on Thursday approved a draft bill aimed at restoring historical justice and rights for Taiwan's indigenous peoples. The bill will now go to the Legislature for review and debate.
Premier Lai Ching-te said the bill will promote historical justice for indigenous peoples, as well as achieve the substantial restoration and protection of indigenous rights and interests. The bill provides for the establishment of an independent organization to investigate historical injustice and land disputes involving indigenous peoples, and has great significance as an instrument to guarantee their collective rights. The premier instructed the Council of Indigenous Peoples to take the initiative in communicating with the ruling and opposition parties in order to secure a quick and successful conclusion to the legislative process.
