Vice premier says mix of hardware, software key to eSports primacy

:::

Vice Premier Chen Chi-mai on Tuesday took part in an opening press conference for the 2019 Taiwan Legend Championship, where he praised Taiwan's excellent foundation in hardware manufacturing catering to the eSports industry, as well as the competitiveness of the nation's talent development pipeline and the research and development dedicated to game programming. The Taiwan Legend Championship is one of the country's leading eSports tournaments, which pits against each other the top teams from Taipei, New Taipei, Taoyuan, Taichung, Tainan and Kaohsiung.

The vice premier said that the central and local governments, in full cooperation with the private sector, will invest resources to build a showcase for Taiwan's brands. Also highlighted will be popular music and entertainment, together with the nation's unique comics and animation culture, to attract related businesses and establish an even more complete eSports industrial chain.

With the completion at the end of this year of bidding for a new 5G network, Vice Premier Chen emphasized that Taiwan will see a huge boost in applications and services utilizing telecommunications technology, and a giant leap in the competitiveness of the 5G industrial chain. Among the 5G applications set to take off will be the gaming industry, where the pace of development will accelerate rapidly.

As a leader in telecommunications and the premier sponsor of the championship, Chunghwa Telecom will be in a good position to provide generous support to the eSports industry and the development of competitions. The vice premier expressed hope that this would create even more advantageous development opportunities for the progress of eSports in Taiwan.
