Government steps up communication on cross-strait services pact

:::
At the Cabinet's weekly meeting today, Premier Jiang Yi-huah again instructed government agencies to ramp up public communication on the recently signed trade in services agreement between Taiwan and mainland China.

The premier on June 25 had already directed agencies to address concerns and clarify misunderstandings the public may have about the agreement. Among the publicity plans rolled out by various agencies, the Ministry of Economic Affairs (MOEA) and Mainland Affairs Council (MAC) have planned dozens of explanatory events and will organize more as needed. Some of the events will be hosted by ministry heads and department directors with appearances to be made by the president, vice president, premier and vice premier.

"When speaking to people, it is important to put yourself in their place and empathize with their concerns," Jiang told officials. He also reminded them to prepare well, speak in everyday language, and support their points with statistics and real examples. This will help people understand the pact's contents and the government's protective measures for domestic industries, he added.

Premier Jiang said the services trade agreement was sent to the Legislature for ratification after the Cabinet stamped its approval last week. He asked the MAC, MOEA and other agencies to increase communication with lawmakers to garner support from all party caucuses. Pamphlets and information sheets will be prepared to help legislators and citizens understand the pact in a clear and concise manner.
