The Executive Yuan on Thursday approved the draft bill for a basic law on artificial intelligence (AI), intending to create an environment conducive to AI development and application and to promote Taiwan as an "AI island."
Premier Cho Jung-tai said that to meet these goals, the Ministry of Digital Affairs (MODA) drafted the legislation to establish the fundamental principles for AI research, development, application and governance. The new law aims to encourage technological innovation and alignment with international standards, while also protecting intellectual property rights and personal data. It anchors Taiwan's key development priorities for AI, supporting the nation's "AI island" aspirations and positioning it as a global leader in AI development.
The premier instructed the MODA to actively engage with legislative caucuses and all sectors of society once the bill is submitted to the Legislative Yuan for deliberation, clearly articulating the proposed law's legal framework and spirit to build broad support and ensure the swift completion of the legislative process.
