Premier Lin Chuan received Mr. Marcus D. Jadotte, assistant secretary for industry and analysis of the U.S. Department of Commerce, and his delegation at the Executive Yuan today. Lin stated that the U.S. "pivot to Asia" policy has made Taiwan take notice of the great importance the U.S. assigns to Asia and of the role Taiwan can play. He expressed hope that the two nations will conduct more communication and that through bilateral cooperation Taiwan can play a proactive role in the United States' overall Asia strategy.
Investment and trade relations between the U.S. and Taiwan are of utmost importance, and the two countries share common interests and characteristics in everything from economic strategies to such values as democracy, rule of law and human rights, Lin pointed out. He expressed hope that enhancing bilateral trade and investment will consolidate the collaborative relations between the two nations.
The premier also exchanged views about Internet security with the delegation. Internet security is a highly important issue for nations all over the world, and Taiwan has many relevant ideas that it can exchange with the U.S., he said. Moreover, Taiwan has very good Internet security technology and capabilities and can collaborate with the U.S. in this sphere.
Noting that the U.S. Department of Commerce and the Taipei Computer Association earlier signed a Statement of Intent on cybersecurity cooperation, Assistant Secretary Jadotte said he hopes via such collaboration individuals and corporate users in both Taiwan and the U.S. will receive more scrupulous Internet protection, and enterprises will have more security safeguards in conducting commercial activities. This cooperation is highly positive for businesses, consumers and global businesspeople alike, he added.
The premier welcomed Assistant Secretary Jadotte and his delegation to Taiwan, and Assistant Secretary Jadotte expressed hope that their visit will help consolidate the partnership between Taiwan and the United States.
