Premier Mao Chi-kuo has tasked the Ministry of Economic Affairs, which oversees Taiwan Power Co. (Taipower), with expediting two tasks: the return of Taipower's operating profits to the public in the form of lower electricity rates, and the creation of a new formula for electricity pricing.
Both projects must be reasonable, fair and in line with intergenerational justice, Mao said yesterday during interpellation from legislators.
The pricing formula must be submitted to and approved by the Legislature. The premier emphasized that Taipower may proceed with lowering electricity rates before the Legislature passes the formula, as the two projects need not be bound together.
Executive Yuan Spokesperson Sun Lih-chyun pointed out today that besides demanding Taipower to immediately proceed with electricity-rate adjustments, the government will review the company's operational performance as well, and will make information about its relevant operational costs transparent to the public so as to not leave current problems to the next generation.
The Executive Yuan will communicate with the Legislature as soon as possible in order to win support for a new pricing formula and ensure its implementation early next year, Sun stated.
