Premier orders agencies to be prepared ahead of flood season

:::

Premier Lin Chuan today instructed government agencies to strengthen preparations ahead of the annual flood season that begins May 1, and stay on the alert for hazards resulting from the extreme precipitation that may come with climate change.

Speaking to Cabinet members, the premier directed agencies to use a mechanism for horizontal communication that would allow information to be passed along more quickly and help minimize any damage in the event of a disaster.

The formation of Tropical Storm Muifa on Wednesday marks the first of a string of typhoons that will arrive this summer. Last year the government devoted considerable efforts to typhoon preparedness that minimized the impact and damage caused by the storms, Premier Lin said. He hopes those experiences and measures will enable the government to do an even better job this summer. While Muifa is not expected to affect Taiwan directly, disaster agencies should continue conducting drills and finish all preparatory work before flood season begins.
