Premier Mao Chi-kuo has asked the Ministry of Education to use diverse channels to solicit young adult students' views on and creative solutions for student housing problems, Executive Yuan Spokesperson Sun Lih-chyun stated today.
Minister of Education Wu Se-hwa had briefed the premier on related problems and countermeasures. Major concerns include schools offering an insufficient amount of housing during the academic year and the burden of housing being too heavy for young adults just entering the labor market or in the early stages of starting a business. Because these problems involve a wide spectrum of issues, however, a deeper understanding of young adults' own opinions is needed, the spokesperson said.
The premier has said that if necessary, the government can research the option of making public land available in order to help lower costs. However, he has also emphasized that while land should be prioritized for solving problems at hand, it is a finite resource; hence, planners must maintain a degree of flexibility in order to leave opportunities for new choices to future generations.
