Executive Yuan sets up task force to investigate train crash

:::

Premier Lai Ching-te met with government officials on Monday concerning the derailment of a Puyuma Express train in eastern Taiwan the previous day, Executive Yuan Spokesperson Kolas Yotaka said. He gave several directives:

1. An investigation should be conducted quickly. The Executive Yuan has formed an administrative investigation task force to look into the accident.
2. Comprehensive safety inspections should be conducted on all Puyuma Express trains.
3. For the time being, all Puyuma trains should reduce travel speed when negotiating curved tracks.
4. Follow-up assistance should be provided to the families of those killed in the accident.
5. Given that many of the injured and deceased were from Yilan, Hualien and Taitung counties, the premier instructed Minister without Portfolio Chen Mei-ling to visit the site and assess the situation. The premier also asked the three county governments to provide the victims and their families with active assistance and follow-up care.

Central government agencies should work in full cooperation with local governments to minimize casualties from the accident and release findings from the administrative investigation as rapidly as possible, the premier instructed.
