Premier Jiang Yi-huah today reaffirmed the sovereignty of the Republic of China and rejected Communist Party of China General Secretary Xi Jinping's proposal of the "peaceful unification" of Taiwan and mainland China "under the 'one country, two systems' framework."
"The Republic of China has never considered the 'one country, two systems' policy acceptable," he said. "We advocate maintaining the status quo under the Constitution of the Republic of China and putting Taiwan first for the benefit of the people."
The premier made these remarks during interpellation with national legislators at the Legislative Yuan.
Under Beijing's "one country, two systems" framework, Taiwan and mainland China would be ruled by the same national government while maintaining separate economic and political systems. Hong Kong and Macau are examples of this policy.
The Executive Yuan stated that the administration has always advocated maintaining Taiwan's status quo of "no unification, no independence and no use of force" under the framework of the ROC Constitution, as it best suits Taiwanese people's rights and interests.
Based on this policy, which is the "greatest common denominator" among ROC citizens, the government will steadily promote cross-strait trade and exchange in order to increase mutual trust and understanding between people on the two sides of the Taiwan Strait, Executive Yuan officials added.
