Premier Su receives Canadian parliamentary delegation

:::

Premier Su Tseng-chang on Wednesday received a Canadian parliamentary delegation led by Member of Parliament Judy Sgro, chair of the Canada-Taiwan Parliamentary Friendship Group and the Standing Committee on International Trade. The premier thanked Chairperson Sgro and the visiting MPs for frequently speaking out in support of Taiwan in the Canadian parliament. He also thanked the Canadian government for endorsing Taiwan's entry into international organizations such as the World Health Assembly and International Civil Aviation Organization on many international occasions, as well as protesting against China's unilateral actions to disrupt the status quo, in particular its disturbance of regional peace and stability through the ongoing dispatch of warplanes and warships to harass Taiwan. Taiwan's government extends deep gratitude and recognition to the Canadian government for this support.

The premier emphasized that Taiwan and Canada share a close relationship and both recognize universal values such as freedom, democracy and human rights. Trade and investment between our two countries is also on the rise. The premier hopes that—under Chairperson Sgro's leadership—once the visiting MPs return home, they will vigorously promote Taiwan-Canada economic ties, facilitate economic and trade talks and agreements for our mutual benefit, and continue to support Taiwan's membership in relevant international organization in various settings, thus further strengthening our two countries' relationship.

Chairperson Sgro then delivered remarks, saying that it had been six years since her last visit, and that she was very impressed by how Taiwan had progressed. She also stated that after returning to Canada, the delegation would continue to push to realize the signing of a Taiwan-Canada Foreign Investment Promotion and Protection Agreement (FIPA) and the acceptance of Taiwan's application to join the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP). Chairperson Sgro also remarked that Taiwan's immense interest in signing a FIPA and joining the CPTPP, and its constant and many efforts to achieve those goals, let everyone see how ambitious the government is. It also highlights how similar Taiwan and Canada are, and that we are working to create more opportunities to meet the various needs of our respective countries.
