Vice Premier Shih Jun-ji visited the Central Bank of the Republic of China (Taiwan) on Monday to preside over the transition ceremony for outgoing Governor Perng Fai-nan and incoming Governor Yang Chin-long.
In his remarks, Vice Premier Shih lauded Governor Perng for his professionalism, practicality and perseverance in maintaining Taiwan's steady economic development over the past 20 years, calling the retiring banker a pillar of the nation whose legacy will endure. Governor Perng has been awarded a prestigious A grade in the annual central banker rankings published by the New York-based Global Finance magazine 14 times, and this January, he received a lifetime achievement award from the international financial publisher Central Banking Publications.
Newly appointed Governor Yang Chin-long comes into the job with a wealth of experience in economics and banking, having earned a Ph.D. from the University of Birmingham's Department of Economics before serving as the assistant director general of the central bank's Department of Economic Research, the representative stationed at the bank's London Representative Office, director general of the Department of Banking and deputy governor of the bank itself, among other positions.
Expressing confidence that Governor Yang's past experience and achievements give him the knowledge and skill necessary to lead the bank and devote his labors to Taiwan's resurgent economic development, the vice premier said he expects the new governor to prove adept at balancing an innovative and forward-looking approach to seize new opportunities with the deliberate caution needed to preserve the national livelihood.
