Cabinet commemorates lives lost in Penghu plane crash

:::
The Executive Yuan Council held a minute of silence at today's meeting to commemorate those who lost their lives last night when TransAsia Airways flight GE222 crashed near Magong Airport in Penghu.

Afterward, Premier Jiang Yi-huah directed the Ministry of Transportation and Communications to supervise TransAsia Airways as it provides assistance to the families of the departed. The airline should provide the utmost empathy and concern while handling these families' affairs and be appropriately comprehensive with respect to compensation for their loss, Jiang advised.

The premier also asked relevant agencies and local governments to assist the Penghu County Government in managing follow-up matters in order to minimize the damage from this tragedy.

There is still much work to do, Jiang noted. To prevent another such tragedy from occurring in the future, the Aviation Safety Council (ASC) is presently performing the official investigation of the accident. It is ascertaining all possible factors that could have contributed to the crash, including the piloting, weather, airplane structure and air traffic control, and the cause of the accident cannot be concluded until after this investigation is completed, the premier emphasized.
