Premier: Kaohsiung Exhibition Center to bolster economic growth

:::

On an inspection of the Kaohsiung Exhibition Center (KEC) construction site today, Premier Sean Chen expressed hopes that the facility would transform Kaohsiung into a major economic gateway, given Kaohsiung harbor's vital role in the nation's imports and exports.

With the Taipei World Trade Center (TWTC) and the TWTC Nangang Exhibition Hall already servicing northern Taiwan, central and local governments will work closely to complete the KEC in the south to balance and bolster the nation's economic development.

The premier pointed out that a glance at the KEC's schematics immediately suggests the building's location. Its ocean-wave roof design imparts a strong impression of the unique characteristics of a port city.

Chen further noted that convention and exhibition centers in Europe have contributed much to economic growth in those nations. In Taiwan, more attention should be paid to such facilities as exports account for 70 percent of gross domestic product, he said. Trade exhibitions bring people and commodities together, matching vendors to buyers. Around the world, much room exists for development for such exhibition centers.

The Ministry of Economic Affairs stated that it has invested NT$3 billion (US$102 million) in the project while state-run CPC Corp. has loaned the land free of charge. When completed by the end of 2013, the KEC will accommodate 1,500 standard (3x3meters) booths, a conference hall accommodating 2,000 people, two conference halls holding 800 people each, and 10 conference rooms for 20 to 40 people. The multipurpose center can host large functions like exhibitions, conferences, gatherings and entertainment events.
