The Executive Yuan on Thursday approved draft amendments to the Patent Act and the Trademark Act which would rebuild a more efficient specialized system for patent and trademark remedies, and guarantee the rights of trademark applicants by establishing a system for trademark agents. The amendments were proposed by the Ministry of Economic Affairs and will now be submitted to the Legislative Yuan for deliberation.
Premier Chen Chien-jen said that patent and trademark protections are crucial issues that impact the development of Taiwanese industries and their operations within international markets. The proposed amendments to the acts are primarily designed to align Taiwan with global standards and address the practical need to rebuild the existing remedial system, so as to enable the timely and professional resolution of patent and trademark infringement cases, and strengthen procedural safeguards to benefit the growth and development of Taiwanese industry.
The premier said that in response to industry demands, the proposed amendments also accelerate review mechanism processes and establish a trademark agent system, thus safeguarding the rights of trademark applicants with a better legal environment.
