Post-election statement from Premier Mao

:::
Early results from Republic of China's 14th presidential and ninth legislative elections have come in, and it is clear that the people have made their choice. My sincere congratulations to the newly elected president, vice president and legislators. And to all who worked to make this a successful and smooth election process, I express my deep gratitude as well.

Now that the polls have closed, the people have expressed a new will and the Legislature has a new majority party. We still have four months remaining until May 20 when the new president is sworn in. This change in power comes at a critical time when the world faces daunting political and economic challenges. I do not wish to see this change render the Executive Yuan unable to implement its policies, nor do I wish to see it affect the nation's development or the people's well-being. For these reasons, I have decided to step down as premier and have tendered my resignation to the president. In accordance with constitutional conventions, I will lead my Cabinet in a mass resignation as early as possible so that the president can put national administrative matters back on regular track according to our Constitution's dual-leadership system before the Legislature opens session.

Since my appointment to the premiership in late 2014, we have faced many political and economic complexities at home and abroad. After striving for more than a year, my administrative team has laid a foundation for the nation's economic and social transformation. With the legislative elections over and a new majority party in the Legislature, we must follow fulfill our political responsibility in the spirit of democracy and make the better, more appropriate choice—to use this opportunity and establish constitutional conventions for a Cabinet that is formed by the majority party in the Legislature. This is the only path to ensuring our nation's well-being and protecting our democracy.

Thank you.
