Indonesia's second largest newspaper, Media Indonesia, has printed a letter from Executive Yuan Spokesperson Sun Lih-chyun expressing Taiwan's hopes of signing an economic cooperation agreement (ECA) with the Southeast Asian nation and of jointly promoting prosperity in the region.
In the letter appearing November 8, Sun wrote that Taiwan and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) enjoy close trade relations that have been built not only on geographical proximity but on highly complementary economic and industrial ties. Taiwan values and affirms the achievements of ASEAN countries and looks forward to integrating economically with the region.
Taiwan's vibrant high-tech companies possess a wealth of experience in promoting industrial upgrading and transformation, Sun continued. Some 2,000 Taiwanese companies—many of them well-known names—are currently investing in Indonesia. As the two countries continue to build closer ties, Taiwan believes this partnership can contribute considerably to the enhancement of Indonesia's industrial and economic development. Taiwan also hopes that the bilateral relationship can be deepened by the early signing of an ECA, which will help create prosperity for the region and advance the well-being of the peoples of both countries.
