Premier Lai Ching-te today said that Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) stands as an important cooperative organization for developing trade and economic growth in the Asia-Pacific region, as well as a key platform for Taiwan and other nations in the region to expand policy discussions, technology exchanges and industrial development. Such exchanges encourage bilateral and multilateral cooperation, expansion of cooperative opportunities and the promotion of Taiwan's New Southbound Policy.
Following a report by the Ministry of Transportation and Communications (MOTC) on Taiwan's participation at the 10th APEC Transportation Ministerial Meeting, the premier directed the MOTC to continue engagement with APEC as a channel for closely monitoring evolving trends and changes across the full spectrum of transportation development issues. The MOTC was also tasked with carrying forward discussions on successful bilateral exchanges with major member economies present at the APEC gathering.
The MOTC said that the 10th APEC Transportation Ministerial Meeting took place from October 6 to October 8 at Port Moresby in Papua New Guinea. MOTC Minister Ho Chen Tan led Taiwan's delegation to the event, and was invited to share Taiwan's experience with developing and using drones to build an information system for processing roadway accidents. Also discussed were Taiwan's experiences with encouraging innovation and green technology in transportation, building resilient and sustainable transportation systems, and preventing the use of transportation systems for human trafficking. The delegation entered into bilateral discussions and exchanges with 11 member economies during the three-day event, returning to Taiwan with an excellent record of achievement.
